Energy efficiency – HP ProLiant DL servers take honors
Four HP ProLiant servers take top honors with the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) SPECpower_ssj™2008
benchmark testing (Figure 4-1):
• HP ProLiant DL180 G5 server — #1 in worldwide energy efficient performance
• HP ProLiant DL160 G5 server — #2 in worldwide energy efficient performance
• HP ProLiant DL360 G5 server — highly rated in two-socket energy efficient performance per watt benchmark results
• HP ProLiant 580 G5 servers — highest four-processor result

ssj_ops/watt
The SPECpower_ssj 2008 benchmark measures server power consumption in relation to performance, providing information to
compare the power efficiency of servers. The benchmark gradually increases the server’s workload and measures power
consumption at designated intervals. Results are measured in overall ssj_ops/watt, which is calculated by adding the measured
transaction throughputs and then dividing by the sum of the average power consumed for each segment. For details on the
benchmark methodology and metrics, see the "Overview of SPECpower_ssj2008 on HP ProLiant servers and server blades"
paper available at
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/servers/benchmarks/specpower_ssj_overview.pdf.
Server power efficiency has become a high-priority issue for the IT industry, computer manufacturers, and governments. These
results clearly demonstrate that HP is aware of and has responded to concerns regarding overall server energy efficiency while
continuing to offer enterprise-class features.
