Transitioning from HP StorageWorks Fast Recovery Solution to HP Application Recovery Manager software Whitepaper (March 2008)
would b e a point in time when one less backup is available, there is some risk
associated with the transition.
• If there i s sufficient available capacity for an extra backup set, the deletion of
existing ba ckups is not necessary; hence there is no additional risk associated
with the transition.
Onetimeorphase
dimplementation
Since the two pro
ducts have been proven to coexist, no additional hardware is required
to have both systems operational simultaneously. You can choose between a full or
phased im plementation. This a llows a dministrators the flexibility to gain experience
with Application Recovery Manager in a subset of the former FRS environment, s ho uld
they choose to
.
Limitations
• Backups created using FRS cannot be restored using Application Recovery
Manager, and vice versa.
• Only one V SS backup can be performed on a given server at a time, regardless
of the backup application used. This is a VSS limitation.
• Data mount p oints on the backup host that is a n FRS Recovery Server, should not
be shared between the two applications.
• If you install AutoPass during the Application Recovery Manager installation and
you later uninstall Ap plication Recovery Manager, the FRS licenses can no longer
be used. If you want to keep the FRS licenses, do not install AutoPass during the
Applicatio n Recovery Ma n ager installation. Application Recovery Manager
offers additional options for importing the licenses, see the HP Application
Recovery Manager software installation and licensing guide.
Transition procedure
1. Updat
e the Host Bus Adapters, drivers, firmware , MPIO, and VSS Provider to
at least the minimum supported configuration of Application Recovery M anager.
See the HP Application Recovery Manager Instant Recovery & Zero Downtim e
Back
up Support Matrix.
2. Install the HP VDS provider. For the required VDS provider version, see the HP
Application Recovery Manager Instant Recovery & Zero Downtime Ba ckup Sup port
Mat
rix.
3. If necessary, delete the oldest set of FRS backups using the FRS ap p lication, to
allow enough space for the intended backup(s). This may be done at one time
or optionally as an iterative process, where a single FRS storage group backup
is
deleted and recreated using Application Recovery Manager backup and the
processisrepeated.
