Transitioning from HP StorageWorks Fast Recovery Solution to HP Application Recovery Manager software Whitepaper (March 2008)
1 Transitioning from FRS
to Appli cation Recovery
Manager
Overview
This document provides you with guidance and a pro cedure for transitioning from
HP StorageWorks Fast Recovery Solution (FRS) to H P Application Recovery Manager
software.
HP has performed coexistence testing of FRS and Application Recovery Manager, using
default program locations and settings, and concluded the following:
1. Both FRS and Ap plication Recovery Manager can reside on the same ser ver
without loss of functionality to either product.
2. The removal of FRS, when the application transition is finished, will not affect
Application Recover y Manager functionality or existing backups that have
been created with FRS.
3. When FRS is removed without deleting existing backups from within FRS, you
will still have the option to reinstall FRS and perform restore of retained data,
should the need arise.
This simplifies the transition to the new product. There is no need to migrate or m ove
data; you can simply start using Application Recovery Manager and eventually phase
out and uninstall FRS.
However, there are some considerations and limitations that you should review in order
to develop a transition plan that minimizes risk to the production environment.
Consider

Disk array capacity/Risk balance
The available capacity on the disk array that is used for creating clones will determine
the level of risk for the transition:
• If there is not enough capacity for an extra backup set available, it may be
necessary to delete the oldest backup set(s) created with FRS to free enough
capacity to create a backup using Application Recovery Manager. Since there
