1 Announcements Application Recovery Manager is a scalable recovery software solution providing automated backup and recovery of Exchange, SQL, Oracle, and SAP R/3 application data designed to improve application availability with data recovery in minutes. Now announcing its later version: Application Recovery Manager A.06.10. Upgrades Upgrade information is available in the HP Application Recovery Manager software installation and licensing guide.
Licensing Application Recovery Manager A.06.10 leverages the product numbers from Application Recovery Manager A.06.00. All Application Recovery Manager A.06.00 licenses can be used with Application Recovery Manager A.06.10 and retain their original functionality. No license migration is required. However, depending on new functionality, you may have to install new product licenses. For more information, refer to the HP Application Recovery Manager software installation and licensing guide.
2 Product features and benefits Below is a summary of the benefits provided by Application Recovery Manager A.06.
perform backup and restore of the Oracle datafiles and the database recovery. Recovery is possible only if the archive logs and control file are provided. Other Oracle objects (control files, recovery catalogs, and archive redo logs) can be backed up using third–party backup software. For supported Oracle versions and platforms, see the latest support matrices, available at http://www.hp.com/support/manuals. For detailed documentation, see the HP Application Recovery Manager software integration guide.
Support for HP StorageWorks Disk Array XP integration Application Recovery Manager A.06.10 introduces support for HP StorageWorks Disk Array XP on Windows and HP-UX systems using the Application Recovery Manager SSE agent. You can back up and perform an instant recovery of disk images, filesystems, Oracle, and SAP R/3 databases. See the HP Application Recovery Manager software concepts guide and HP Application Recovery Manager software administrator's guide.

3 Limitations and recommendations Size limitations Number of sessions in the database There can be up to 1,000,000 sessions in the database. At the most, 2,000 backup sessions can be run in one day. Upgrade limitations • Upgrade from one platform to another (for example from Windows 2003 to HP-UX) is not supported. Platform limitations UNIX limitations • File names containing quotation marks are not supported. • To view online Help on UNIX platforms, you need to have a Web browser installed.
• Backing up network shared volumes using the VSS functionality is not supported. • When installing Application Recovery Manager on Windows, you cannot run multiple instances of the setup.exe program. 64-bit Windows limitations • The glossary is not available in online Help on 64-bit versions of Windows. Limitations on disk array integrations HP StorageWorks Disk Array XP limitations • Only BC configurations are supported, CA configurations are not supported.
In such cases, a ZDB to the high performance disks and subsequent instant recovery will reverse the situation. • Routine maintenance, including (but not limited to) hot-swapping HBAs/SCSI controllers, disk array controllers, FC switches, and/or online firmware upgrades during backups are not supported. Backups are a high-IO activity and should not be done at the same time as routine maintenance.
• The maximum pathname length supported by Application Recovery Manager is 1023 characters. Recommendations Number of clients in a cell In typical environments, 25 clients per cell is a recommended number. Concurrent backup or restore sessions Successful Application Recovery Manager backup and restore completion is influenced by a number of factors imposed by non-Application Recovery Manager components, including Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service.
4 Recognized issues and workarounds This section lists known Application Recovery Manager and non-Application Recovery Manager issues and workarounds.
Workaround: None. Do not push the components to the virtual host. Install the clients locally, as described in the documentation. • Import of the Application Recovery Manager cluster virtual server will fail during the installation of cluster-aware Cell Manager if there is another cluster virtual server configured on Microsoft Cluster Server in any cluster group and is offline.
You can use copy and paste to input filenames as they appear in code page 1252. Refer also to online Help index keyword “internationalization” for internationalization limitations tables. Integration related issues SAP R/3 • SAP backup fails, when '-u' option is specified in the command line when using brbackup or brarchive commands. Workaround: If you specified '-u' in the command line of brbackup or brarchive, it should be followed by username/password.
Cluster related issues Common issues • If a backup session stops responding during a cluster failover, and all session agents fail, a timeout will be reported but the session itself will not abort. The default session timeout occurs after 7200 seconds (two hours). As long as the session is not responding, another session using the same backup specification cannot be started. Workaround: Manually abort the backup session at any time and restart the session.
session manager (BSM) process. In both cases, such behavior of the integration agent is wrong. Workaround: None. Issues with MC/ServiceGuard • If you export a physical node from the MC/ServiceGuard cluster, you cannot import it back, as the cell_server file will be deleted. This file is shared among all nodes of a cluster, so you need to recreate it. Workaround: Run /opt/omni/sbin/install/omniforsg.ksh -primary -upgrade.
• After a long period of continuous operations, the OmniInet process memory usage on the backup server can grow very large. Workaround: 1. Check that there are no sessions running on the client. 2. Restart OmniInet (Application Recovery Manager Inet) in the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services window or using the commands net stop and net start.
Non-Application Recovery Manager issues related to integrations Disk array integrations Volume Shadow Copy service • When restoring the MSDE writer while the SQL server is offline, the restore completes with error messages similar to the following : Major] From: OB2BAR@concord.ipr2.hermes.si "MSVSSW" Time: 8/7/2003 1:49:49 PMComponent 'master' reported: 'CSqlRestor::PrepareToRestore failed with HRESULT = 0x8000ffff'. Workaround: None.
Workaround: None. Backup and instant recovery are not affected. Other non-Application Recovery Manager issues • Application Recovery Manager uses host name resolution to communicate between hosts. This is done either via DNS servers or via /etc/hosts or /etc/lmhosts file. If the DNS service is not available or correctly configured on the Windows clients, you can edit the hosts (lmhosts) file, which are located in the %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc directory.
5 Installation requirements This chapter gives a description of Cell Manager, Installation Server, and client installation requirements. It also provides a list of upgrade requirements. General installation requirements: • Free TCP/IP port: 5555 by default • The TCP/IP protocol must be installed and running. The protocol must be able to resolve all hostnames in the Application Recovery Manager Cell.
• 180 MB of disk space • 2 × size_of_the_biggest_package_to_be_installed + 5MB of disk space needed on system drive • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.
installation packages, see the web site http://www.hp.com/products1/unix/ java/mozilla/index.html.
The following table shows the disk space and RAM requirements for Application Recovery Manager Windows clients: Client System RAM (MB) Disk Space (MB) User Interface1 2562 1003 Integration Modules 64 (recommended 128) 20 1 The documentation (.pdf files, 55 MB) is included. 2 Memory requirements for the GUI system vary significantly with the number of elements that need to be displayed at a time.
Upgrade The upgrade procedure to Application Recovery Manager A.06.10 from Application Recovery Manager A.06.00 is documented in the HP Application Recovery Manager software installation and licensing guide.
Files Installed in the %systemroot%\system32 folder The following files are placed (depending on the components selected) into system32 folder on Windows systems: BrandChgUni.dll 38 Installation requirements This is a resource library. It is used only internally; however, it also contains the path to registry settings, so it must be located in a well-known location where it can be accessed by integration libraries.
