3PAR Replication Adapter 4.x for VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager Implementation Guide
8 Failover
Failover is a process within the VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager and occurs when a
protected site virtual infrastructure is replicated to the recovery site. The HP 3PAR Storage System
has Remote Copy Primary role at the protected site and Remote Copy Secondary role at the recovery
site in an event of a failover.
Failover is planned in advance by the following:
• Identifying replicated datastores and RDMs between two HP 3PAR Storage System array
managers and VMs residing on the replicated datastores.
• Inventory mapping resources (e.g. Networks, Computer Resources, Virtual Machine Folders)
between the protected and the recovery sites.
• Creating a protection group for VMs at the protected site.
• Creating a failover recovery plan at the recovery site for the protection group at the protected
site.
The failover plan is tested at the recovery site to ensure the protected site’s virtual infrastructure
replicable at the time of disaster. The HP 3PAR Replication Adapter creates readwrite snapshots
of all replicated volume in a failover recovery plan and delivers the snapshots to the recovery site
ESX host(s).
The failover plan executes at the recovery site and replicates the protected site’s virtual infrastructure.
The HP 3PAR Replication Adapter reverses the Remote Copy role of storage systems and delivers
all replicated volumes in a failover recovery plan to the recovery site ESX host(s).
