HP 3PAR Peer Motion Guide

4 Using the HP 3PAR Peer Motion Utility
HP 3PAR Peer Motion Utility controls the migration of a host and its data from a source HP 3PAR
StoreServ Storage system to a destination HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system with as little disruption
to the host as possible. It provides a set of commands for performing the migration operations.
You can use it to script migrations of virtual volumes from older HP 3PAR Storage systems to the
latest HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage systems, in Online (no I/O disruption), Minimally Disruptive (little
I/O downtime), or Offline mode.
The HP 3PAR Peer Motion Utility is for users who have good knowledge of storage administration
and migration workflow. The commands listed in this chapter can be used with the purpose of
scripting. For additional details about the CLI commands, see “HP 3PAR Peer Motion Utility
Commands” (page 92).
The HP 3PAR Peer Motion Utility supports three types of data migration:
Online Migration
Online Windows Cluster Migration
Single VV Migration
Minimally Disruptive Migration (MDM)
Offline Migration
For details regarding data migration types, see “Migration Types” (page 6).
To use the HP 3PAR Peer Motion Utility:
1. Verify that prerequisites are met. See “Pre-Migration Tasks” (page 60).
2. Complete installation. See “Installing the HP 3PAR Peer Motion Utility” (page 61).
3. Verify services. See “Confirming Services” (page 67).
4. Launch the application. See “Launching the HP 3PAR Peer Motion Utility” (page 68).
5. Use the Peer Motion Utility commands. See “Using the HP 3PAR Peer Motion Utility Commands
(page 68).
Pre-Migration Tasks
Refer to “Data Migration Requirements” (page 14) for requirements.
The following must be performed and verified before using the HP 3PAR Peer Motion Utility:
On the storage system:
Two ports to be configured as host ports on the source HP 3PAR storage system (say 2:2:3(Host
Port 1) and 3:2:3(Host Port 2) using HP 3PAR Management Console or CLI, if not already
available to be used for peer connection.
Configure two adjacent host ports as peer ports on the destination HP 3PAR storage system
(say 2:1:1(Peer Port 1) and 3:1:1(Peer Port 2) using HP 3PAR Management Console or CLI.
For Online Windows Cluster migration, create NPIV ports for above peer ports configured
on destination using HP 3PAR CLI and zone them to respective peer ports.
Two ports to be configured as host ports on the destination 3PAR storage system (say 2:2:1(Host
port of destination 1) and 3:2:1(Host port of destination 2) using HP 3PAR Management
Console or CLI.
On the fabric:
Create first zone, Z1 with Host Port 1 zoned to Peer Port 1
Create second zone, Z2 with Host Port 2 zoned to Peer Port 2
There is a third zone Z3 between Host Port 1, Host Port 2 and HBA1 already
