HP 3PAR AIX and IBM Virtual I/O Server Implementation Guide
12 Migrating the IBM Virtual I/O Server
VIOS Migration Using the IBM Migration DVD
This section covers the precautions that must be adhered to if the IBM Virtual I/O Server is being
migrated from previous versions of VIOS using the IBM migration DVD. This section applies only
to those IBM Virtual I/O Servers that have the VIOS boot disk located on the HP 3PAR storage
array. It is always strongly recommended that the VIOS system and configuration be backed up
in the event an issue occurs during the migration procedure.
Requirements for Migrating VIOS
Before starting the VIOS migration from previous versions of VIOS using the IBM migration DVD,
reduce the number of paths to the VIOS boot disks on the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage array to a
single path. This can be accomplished by making appropriate SAN zoning changes to reduce
paths to a single path to the VIOS boot disks.
WARNING! Before starting the VIOS migration from previous versions of VIOS using the IBM
migration DVD, reduce the number of paths to the VIOS boot disks on the HP 3PAR StoreServ
Storage array to a single path. Failure to perform this step may result in the inability to boot the
VIOS from HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage array once the migration has completed.
REQUIRED
HP recommends backing up the VIOS system and system configuration in the event an issue occurs
during the migration procedure.
Once the number of paths have been reduced to a single path from the host to the HP 3PAR
StoreServ Storage and from the fabric to the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage volumes containing the
VIOS boot disk and related system disks, proceed with the upgrade using the IBM Migration DVD.
CAUTION: Once the number of paths have been reduced to a single path from the host to the
HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage, proceed with the upgrade using the IBM Migration DVD.
Migrating from Previous VIOS Versions
Once the requirements called out in “Booting from the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage” (page 43)
have been adhered to, follow the instructions covered in the IBM documentation on migrating your
IBM Virtual I/O Server. Install all mandatory updates as required that pertain to your environment
as described by IBM. IBM procedures to perform the VIOS migration are available on the following
website:
www.ibm.com
Completing the VIOS Migration
1. When VIOS is booted from HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage, reduce the number of paths to the
VIOS boot device and related system disks to a single path.
For a direct connect environment this will be from the host to HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage.
For a SAN environment this will be from the fabric to HP StoreServ storage volumes containing
the VIOS boot disk and related system disks, and from the fabric to the VIOS hosts.
WARNING! Failure to reduce to a single path may result in an inability to boot after
migration.
2. Perform the migration using the IBM documentation.
