HP StorageWorks 9100 Extreme Data Storage System administration guide V1.0.2 (AN540-96018, February 2010)
NOTE:
The HP ExDS system automatically generates the smb.conf file when it starts the Samba services
via the smb_meth script described below. The smb.conf file is created from smb.default when
no virtual Samba servers are active on the server and should not be edited directly. Do not use any
GUI tools such as YaST to configure Samba, because they will modify and overwrite the smb.conf
file.
Templates for the smb.default and /etc/samba/ smb.conf.<virtual-server> files are
available in the /etc/samba directory on each server. They are installed by the Samba deployment
package.
smb.default
This file is used on servers that are not currently hosting a virtual Samba server and represents the
common Samba parameters used for all shares. This is a case for a server in a standby configuration
or when existing virtual Samba servers have been stopped (in effect, the file is a placeholder). This
file must be the same on all servers. The following parameters are set in the file:
The file includes the following parameters:
• netbios name. The %h returns the Internet name of the server from NIS, DNS, or /etc/hosts.
• workgroup. The name of the Samba workgroup (the default is WORKGROUP).
• smb ports. Required for high availability; do not change or remove. Used by %L expansion.
• encrypt passwords. Optional. Specifies plaintext or encrypted passwords. Most Windows operating
systems require encryption.
• socket options. Required for high availability; do not change or remove.
• dns proxy. Optional.
• local master. Required for high availability; do not change or remove.
• preferred master. Required for high availability; do not change or remove.
• browseable. Required for high availability; do not change or remove.
• wins support. Optional.
This is a basic or minimal smb.default configuration intended to demonstrate the Samba share
functionality of HP ExDS9100. It is not necessarily optimal or secure for most production environments.
smb.conf.<virtual-server>
This file contains information about the share being broadcast by a specific virtual Samba server. For
each virtual Samba server, create the file smb.conf.<virtual-server> where
<virtual-server> is the name of the virtual Samba server.
