HP StorageWorks 9100 Extreme Data Storage System administration guide V1.0.2 (AN540-96018, February 2010)

to this configuration.) This avoids Master Browser elections, which can consume significant amounts
of bandwidth.
The Samba options described in this guide have been tested by HP. Samba has many other con-
figuration options, but those options have not been thoroughly tested by HP in the clustered Samba
environment. If they are suited to your Samba environment, they can be used. However, if you
use configuration parameters other than those included in this guide, HP recommends that you
test your configuration carefully before deploying it in a production environment.
In general, the guidelines found in Samba documentation and online forums are valid in this en-
vironment but the administrator should be especially wary of any configuration parameters that
affect the location of the Samba Tiny Database (TDB) or the configuration files.
A filesystem can only be associated with one virtual Samba server.
Configuration steps
When using Samba with HP ExDS9100, consider the following points:
The smb_meth script provided with HP ExDS9100 controls the Samba startup. You do not need
to configure Samba to start automatically.
Before configuring Samba for the first time, be sure that the smb.conf and smb.default files
are in sync. To do this, copy the smb.default file over the smb.conf file.
The basic steps to configure Samba with HP ExDS are below, followed by details for each step:
1. Modify firewall rules to allow Samba communications.
2. Install the Samba deployment package.
3. Create /var/mxso/samba/conf directory.
4. Create the Samba configuration files.
5. If necessary, set passwords for Samba users.
6. Create symbolic links.
7. Configure HP ExDS virtual hosts.
8. Configure a CUSTOM service monitor for each virtual host.
Step 1 Modify firewall rules to allow Samba communications
If your system was originally installed with version V1.0.2 or later, you can skip this step. If your
system was originally installed with V1.0 or V1.0.1 and subsequently updated to V1.0.2, run the
following commands to allow CIFS to operate through the ExDS firewall:
Step 2 Install the Samba deployment package
The Samba deployment package is shipped with the HP ExDS systems, but not installed by default.
To install the Samba deployment package:
1. Boot all servers. If for some reason a server cannot be booted at this time, install the software
and create symbolic links as described below the next time the server reboots.
2. Install the software with the following command:
