HP StorageWorks 9100 Extreme Data Storage System administration guide V1.0.2 (AN540-96018, February 2010)
where 16.123.123.1 is the virtual host.
CAUTION:
Do not disable the exdsadmin virtual host (normally 192.168.0.1). If you do so, the exdsmgr
command will not function normally.
3. Shut down all servers except for the first server as shown in the following example:
# exsmgr shutdown server 2-16
4. If required, shut down the first server to single user mode. This is sometimes required to perform
maintenance, for example, to update disk drive firmware on a storage block.
To go to single user mode, run the following command using the TFT monitor/keyboard; otherwise,
your session will be closed:
# init 1

Matrix management overview
You can use the following commands to manage the Matrix software:
• mxconsole—This is a GUI that allows you to view the status of the Matrix and to make changes.
You can run the mxconsole command on any HP ExDS9100 server blade as long as the HP
ExDS9100 system has Matrix software installed on it to allow an HP ExDS9100 system to be
managed remotely. The DISPLAY variable must be set; typically, this means you log in using the
-X option with ssh(1).
• mx(8)—This is a command line interface that provides nearly the same functionality as mxcon-
sole. On an HP ExDS9100 system, the /root/.matrixrc is set up to contain the Matrix
management password. This allows the root user to use the mx(8) command without having to
enter a password. This password must be correct for the HP ExDS9100 system software to operate
properly.
The Matrix software comprises the cluster and PSFS filesystem functions that underly an HP ExDS
system. The Matrix software provides high availability services that manage NFS, HTTP, Samba
services and the virtual host (vhost) IP addresses that allow clients to access these services. The Matrix
software also provides the PSFS clusterized, globally mounted, filesystem.
The Matrix services are also used by the HP ExDS management stack (the exdsmgr command and
related functions). Specifically, exdsmgr relies on the utility filesystem (/var/mxso) and the exdsadmin
virtual host IP address.
You can use the exdsmgr command for many management tasks, including managing PSFS filesystems,
virtual host IP addresses, and their associated services. However, sometimes the exdsmgr command
does not provide the same degree of control that is available through the mxconsole and mx(8)
commands. In these cases, you can use mxsconsole or mx(8) to configure the system directly
without using exdsmgr. Examples where this is useful include:
• Creation of export groups other than exds_default_expg. This allows subsets of servers to serve
different VNFS exports.
• Normally, the exdsmgr command creates a "balanced" failover pattern. However, the mxconsole
or mx(8) commands can be used to create a non-standard failover pattern.
