HP StorageWorks 9100 Extreme Data Storage System administration guide V1.0.2 (AN540-96018, February 2010)
Upgrading all Virtual Connect modules
The Virtual Connect firmware upgrade process updates all Virtual Connect modules at once. You must
shutdown all servers except one to perform the update. In addition, you will lose network connectivity
during the update process.
1. Install the firmware onto the system in one of two ways depending on the source of the firmware:
• HP ExDS9100 mxso-firmware RPM. Install the mxso-firmware RPM on all servers using
the exdsmgr install update command.
• Download the firmware directly from www.hp.com, and copy it to the /opt/hp/mxso/
firmware directory on all servers. Create a symlink as described in the README.txt file
to the firmware. Make sure the file has world read permissions.
2. Shut down all servers except the first server. See Shutting down to a single server on page 35
for instructions. Do not shut down to single user mode.
3. Log in to the Virtual Connect module domain manager as shown in the following example:
# ssh glory-vc -| exds
where glory is the system name.
4. Ensure that Checkpoint Status is valid by running the show domain command.
5. Run the update firmware command on the domain manager to reload the firmware. The URL
is:
http://<exdsadmin-ip>:9070/fw/vc_fw
where <exdsadmin-ip> is the IP address of the exdsadmin virtual host.
6. Follow any on screen commands to complete the firmware load.
The firmware update process automatically resets all Virtual Connect modules. You could lose
network connectivity to the server when this happens.
7. Reboot the first server.
8. Run the exdsmgr syscheck command to validate that all Virtual Connect modules have the
same firmware and are at the correct minimal revision.
9. Boot the remaining servers.
Upgrading HP ExDS9100cc, HP ExDS9100cx I/O module,
and disk drive firmware
This firmware is only delivered in the mxso-firmware RPM.
IMPORTANT:
The update process requires a storage block to be power cycled. Since this involves a power cycle of
both HP ExDS9100cc controllers or all HP ExDS9100cx I/O modules, you cannot access storage
during this time. Therefore, a full system shutdown is required.
To upgrade HP ExDS9100cc, HP ExDS9100cx I/O module, and disk drive firmware
1. Download the RPM.
2. Install on all servers.
