Cisco MDS 9710 Director

The Cisco MDS 9710 Director is a high-performance SAN switch that is designed to meet the

requirements of enterprise data center storage environments. As the first switch in the Cisco MDS 9700

Series, the Cisco MDS 9710 Director includes the following new components:

• A ten-slot chassis

• A crossbar switching fabric module

• A supervisor module

• A 48-Port 16-Gbps Fibre Channel switching module

The combination of these components, along with the underlying architecture of the Cisco MDS 9700

series, allows the Cisco MDS 9710 Director to deliver the following features:

• High performance, with up to 24 Tbps of Fibre Channel switching bandwidth

• Reliability, high availability, and scalability through nondisruptive software upgrades, stateful

process restart and failover, and redundancy of all major components.

• Intelligent network services, including VSAN technology, IVR, and smart zoning

• Virtualization

• Comprehensive security features

• SAN management tools including Cisco Data Center Network Manager (DCNM) and the

command-line interface (CLI)

• Online diagnostics

Cisco MDS 9710 Chassis

The Cisco MDS 9710 Director has a ten-slot chassis that supports up to eight 48-port, 16-Gbps switching

modules, two supervisor modules, up to six fabric modules, three fan trays, and up to eight power

supplies. Airflow is front-to-back in the Cisco MDS 9710 chassis.

Crossbar Switching Fabric Module

The Cisco MDS 9710 Director supports up to six crossbar fabric modules. Designed specifically for the

Cisco MDS 9710 Director, each crossbar fabric module is installed vertically at the back of the chassis

behind the fan trays.
