“Compared to our previous tape backup, the
biggestbenetistheguaranteethatIcan

active alert if a hard disk is about to fail - this
happened recently and HP quickly replaced
the disk, with no loss of data.”
“We must keep backups for 30 years, and
couldbeaskedforanylefrommanyyears
ago,” continues Prakash. “Tape is prone to
physicalproblemsanditisdiculttocontrol
the storage environment. Disk does not have
these issues.”
The de-duplication features of HP StoreOnce
mean that Himatsingka Seide can compress
its backups, saving money. Himatsingka
Seide achieves a de-duplication ratio of
typically 6:1, meaning it can compress 18TB
of data from one site into only 3TB.
The StoreOnce Backup is typically three
times quicker than competing systems and
far faster than Himatsingka Seide’s previous
tape backup systems, which shortens the
backup window.
“Our monthly backup used to take two days,
where now it is three hours,” says Prakash.
“Previouslyanychangesmadetolesduring
those two days were vulnerable, as they
were not on the latest backup - now we
can be sure we are backing up fully up to
dateles.”
Restoration time is also faster, as Prakash
