In one example, the payroll run for the entire
organisation had previously taken six hours
to complete on the old system. After the
migration to HP-UX, it only took 30 minutes
– meaning that it runs 12 times faster,
and saves 91 per cent of the time required
for the job.
Due to this time saving, users have more time
in which to input their work before the payroll
job needs to be started. It also means that if
there are any errors, there is a longer window
in which to handle the corrections and run
the job again – so the payroll can be more
accurate and up-to-date.
Reliable and interoperable
The new HP hardware integrates with an
IBM tape drive that had been retained as
part of the infrastructure. Chew comments,
“Everythinginteroperatesne–Iwas
expecting there might be some incompatibility
issues, but it all turned out well.”
According to Chew, the system is reliable in
operation. He comments, “We have had one
power outage, which the server handled well,
switching over to a UPS over the weekend
without downtime.”
“HP’s support team did
a good job through the
migration, and they were
able to escalate issues
eciently,respondquickly
and resolve our problems.
I was really impressed.”
– Chew Chee Keong, manager, Information
Systems at Certis CISCO
“We have a dedicated service manager
(ASM) at HP who contacts us quite frequently
to check on the system, and to provide
recommendations, so we always have a good
idea of the system health and what areas
we could improve,” says Chew. “The service
manager is responsive, and he helps me
planoutwhatIneedtodo–whichInd
particularly helpful.”
For the future, Certis is considering moving
its SAP infrastructure into the cloud on a
subscription-based model. Chew comments,
“Whenwespeciedoursystem,wewere
already thinking about expandability and
future growth, and we had discussions with
HP to ask if their proposed solution could
scale to double its resources.
“In their proposal, HP were able to show how
much memory and what other changes would
be needed to expand the system, in order to
achieve the performance we wanted,”
says Chew. “This meant that the proposal
was able to cover our future needs as well
as the immediate requirements, which gave
uscondenceintheHPsolution.
“Overall, the migration went well, and the
HP project team were very professional,
and were a good team to work with,”
says Chew.
