TAKING CARE OF UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS
ENGINE PROBLEMS
Engine Will Not Start Possible Cause Correction
1. Check control
positions.
Fuel valve OFF. Turn fuel valve ON (page 10).
Throttle lever in wrong position. Move throttle lever to CHOKE
position, unless the engine is
warm (page 17).
2. Check fuel. Out of fuel. Refuel (page 45).
Bad fuel; mower stored without
treating or draining gasoline, or
refueled with bad gasoline.
Drain fuel tank and carburetor
(page 50). Refuel with fresh
gasoline (page 45).
3. Remove and inspect
spark plug.
Spark plug faulty, fouled, or
improperly gapped.
Gap, or replace spark plug
(page 38).
Spark plug wet with fuel (flooded
engine).
Dry and reinstall spark plug.
Start the engine with the throttle
in the FAST position.
4. Take the mower to an
authorized Honda
servicing dealer, or
refer to shop manual.
Fuel filter clogged, carburetor
malfunction, ignition
malfunction, valves stuck, etc.
Replace or repair faulty
components as necessary.
Loss of Power Possible Cause Correction
1. Check throttle
position.
Throttle not set to FAST. Move throttle to FAST (page 19).
2. Check grass
condition.
Grass too tall or wet. Raise cutting height (page 12),
cut narrower swath (page 25),
use slower ground speed
(page 21), cut more frequently
when grass is dry.
3. Check under mower
deck.
Mower deck clogged. Clean out mower deck
(page 26).
4. Check air filter. Air filter clogged. Clean or replace air filter
(page 37).
5. Check fuel. Bad fuel; mower stored without
treating or draining gasoline, or
refueled with bad gasoline.
Drain fuel tank and carburetor
(page 50). Refuel with fresh
gasoline (page 45).
6. Take mower to an
authorized Honda
servicing dealer, or
refer to shop manual.
Fuel filter clogged, carburetor
malfunction, ignition
malfunction, valves stuck, etc.
Replace or repair faulty
components as necessary.
