Contrary to popular belief, thin set unglazed tiled areas are permeable,
and moisture or vapour will migrate through these areas and can be
absorbed into the substrates behind. While water resistant grouts offer
some protection, these areas still remain permeable and over time
increasing levels of moisture will penetrate these joints.
Other influences, which will have an
effect on the integrity of your sealing
joints, will be the normal subsidence,
which occurs in buildings. The drying
and cracking of mastics used to
seal joints and the expansion and
contraction of wooden or concrete
floors, may cause the tiles to
de-laminate or move from their
original position.
So regardless of whether you have
used traditional waterproof mastics
or sealants, you will not necessarily
have a watertight seal around your
bath or shower tray.
