3 Design Limitations
FIREli nk - 25 is i ntended to prov ide LOCALISED incipient fire detection only. Thi s
m eans t hat it is suitable for the subst antial r ange of applicati ons ty pified by; small
non-compartmentalised rooms, warehouse racking, or pieces of electroni c or
elec tromechanic al equipment where it is desirable to achi ev e individual i ncipient fire
reporting. In compartmentalised rooms, each compartment would norm all y use
individual FIREl ink-25 detectors.
This product employ s a ver y low-power aspir ator and the aspirat ing capabili ty of the FIRElink-25 detector
is limited accordingly. FIRElink- 25 is NOT intended to protect large areas, or to sample fr om areas where
ther e m ay be any difference in airflow r ates or pressure differenti als. Application of FIREli nk - 25 in these
circumstances is not r ec ommended. If detection in env ironments conformi ng to these desc r iptions is
required, alt er native versi ons of FI REli nk pr oduc ts should be used.
Maximum recommended sampli ng pipe l ength is 50 metres in STI LL AIR. I n ar eas or applications where
the ex ternal airflow rate is greater than 1 m etre per second, the maxim um sampling pipe length is
reduced to 25 metr es.
Al though by no means essential, it must be rec ommended that if in doubt, Pi peCA D® be used to ensure
that transit tim es, bal anc e of sucti on and individual sampling point sensit iv ity are within desi r ed limi ts.
Sampli ng pipes must have c apped ends. The end cap should be dri lled with a hole normally bet ween 4
or 5mm diam eter and free from bur r s. Sampling hol es should normally be 3-4mm di am eter or as
calculated by Pi peCA D, and free fr om bur r s. Each pipe run should not have more than 10 hol es
(inc luding the end cap hole). Pipe transit time from the furthest sampling hole fro m the detector must not
ex ceed 120 seconds and an approved type of pi pe m ust be used for install ations conformi ng to LPCB
requirements. It is strongly recommended t hat the smoke transi t time from the furthest sampling hole be
check ed dur ing commissioning tests. Capillary Remote Sampling Points may be used in plac e of
sampling holes.
FIREli nk - 25 is supplied with a ‘Pi ped Exhaust’ type Docking Station (see ill ust r ation A). This is primar ily
intended to allow the FIRElink-25 detector to sample from areas which may be at different air pr essure to
the detector loc ation. Typical uses are f or air - duc t sampl ing and allowing the install ation of the detect or in
under-floor or ceili ng v oids or when sampling from pieces of c om puter relat ed equipment.
