Personal Area Net w orking ( PAN) provides ad hoc net w orking bet ween Bluet ooth devices. All devices that you want
to net work m ust support PAN t o create a PAN net w ork. To j oin a PAN net work, you can use any one of the following
m et hods:

Click t he Join a Pe r sonal Area N e t w or k opt ion in t he Bluet oot h t askbar icon m enu.
•
Double- click t he Bluet oot h N et w or k Connect ion icon in t he Net wor k Connect ions it em in Cont rol Panel.
•
Click V ie w Blu e t oot h n e t w ork d e vices in t he N e t w ork Tasks pane in Net w ork Connect ions.
Each of t hese m ethods opens the Bluet oot h Person a l Ar e a N e t w or k Device s dialog box. This dialog box shows
a list of devices that you can connect t o. You can also add or rem ove devices from t his list by using the options at
the bott om of t he dialog box.
To m ake a connect ion, click the device t hat you want t o connect t o, and then click Conn e ct . When the connection
is com plet e, TCP/ I P networking is av ailable bet ween your com puter and t he ot her device. ( I f you click a device that
you are already connect ed t o, the Conne ct butt on becom es a D isconne ct but t on.)
N ot e When bot h PAN devices in a connect ion are Windows XP- based com put ers, t he connection is a point - to- point
connect ion, and you cannot use one com put er t o act as a rout er t o a local ar ea network ( LAN) or t o t he I nternet.
To do this, you need a network access point ( NAP) .
Windows uses Aut om at ic Privat e I P Addressing (API PA) to assign addresses t o t he com put ers in an ad hoc net work.
When API PA is used, t he Dynam ic Host Configur at ion Prot ocol ( DHCP) is not needed. To view t he API PA addr ess,
type ipconfig at a com m and prom pt, and t hen press ENTER. You receive out put t hat is sim ilar t o t he follow ing:

The Gener al tab on t he Stat us dialog box shows t he connect ion speed and t he packet t ransm ission inform at ion
for t he connect ion. The Su ppor t t ab is t he sam e as for ot her network connect ions. By using t he Support t ab, you
can view inform at ion about I P addressing infor m at ion, obtain details about t he connection, or repair t he
connect ion.
