2 . D evice proper t ies
When you view t he proper t ies of a Bluet ooth device, you see t he following inform at ion:
•
The device t ype
•
The hardware address of t he Bluet ooth adapter
•
The dat e and tim e of t he last connection
•
I nform at ion about whet her a passkey is used for pairing w ith t he device
You can also change t he nam e t hat Windows uses for t he device. This change also affect s t he nam e t hat is used by
the Bluet ooth File Transfer Wizard and by Add Modem .
The Se r vice s t ab shows inform at ion about t he services t hat the device support s. For exam ple, when a Bluet ooth
phone or a personal digital assist ant ( PDA) is connect ed t o your com put er, t his t ab m ay show COM port s t hat ar e
available for synchr onizat ion. This t ab m ay also show I nt ernet dial- up net wor king connect ions. You can also select
the services that y ou want to use.
3 . Opt ions
The Opt ions tab in Bluet oot h Devices provides opt ions t hat cont rol how devices discover and connect t o your
com puter. The m ain option is Tu r n discove r y on. This option let s devices discover your com put er so that you can
m ake a connect ion.
Ot her opt ions on this t ab include the following:

Allow Bluet ooth de vices t o conn e ct t o t his com put e r
This check box cont rols whet her any devices can connect to your com puter. I f t his check box is cleared, no
devices can connect t o your com put er.

This opt ion controls whether you receive not ificat ion when a dev ice t ries t o connect t o your com put er. I f t his
check box is cleared, you do not receive not ificat ion.
Ot her opt ions on the Opt ions t ab let you turn on or t urn off the Bluet oot h icon in t he not ificat ion area and rest ore
default settings.
4 . D iscove r y
Typically, your Bluet ooth- enabled com put er will discover ot her devices. Therefor e, you only have t o t urn on the
Tur n discove r y on opt ion when your com put er act s as a device. For exam ple, you m ight want t o t urn on this
opt ion when your com put er is connected t o anot her com put er by a Personal Area Network ( PAN) . When com puters
are connect ed by a PAN, one of the com put ers m ust have discovery t urned on.
By default, discovery is not turned on in Windows XP SP2, because a discoverable Bluet oot h device m ay be less
secure t han a device t hat is not discoverable. We recom m end t hat you keep t he Tur n discov e r y on check box
cleared unless you w ant another Bluetoot h device to discover t he com put er. When the connect ion is com plet e, the
Add Device Wizard t ur ns off discovery aut om atically.
