Maintenance and Service
• Frequency: When ash is within 1-3/4 inch (44mm) of
fireboxlip.Leave1/4to1/2inch(6-13mm)ofashinthe
bottomofthefirebox.

A. Disposal of Ashes
• Placeashesinametalcontainerwithatight-ttinglid.
• The closed container should be placed on a non-
combustibleooror on the ground,wellaway from all
combustiblematerials,pendingnaldisposal.
• Iftheashesaredisposedofbyburialinsoilorotherwise
locallydispersed,theyshouldberetainedintheclosed
containeruntilallcindershavethoroughlycooled

B. Chimney and Chimney Connector
Inspection/Cleaning
• Frequency: Every 2 months during heating season or
as recommended by a certied chimney sweep; more
frequentlyifchimneyexceedsorisunder14-16ft(4.3-
4.8m).(measuredfrombottomofappliance).
• By:CertiedChimneySweep
• Removeallashfromthe reboxandextinguishallhot
embersbeforedisposal.
• Allowtheappliancetocoolcompletely.
• Disconnectuepipeorremovebafeandceramicblanket
from appliance before cleaning chimney. Otherwise
residue can pile up on top of the bafe and ceramic
blanket.(SeeBafeRemovalonpage 23).
• Closethedoortightly.
• Thecreosote or sootshould be removed with abrush
specicallydesignedforthetypeofchimneyinuse.
• Cleanoutfallenashesfromtherebox.
• Itisalsorecommendedthatbeforeeachheatingseason
theentiresystembeprofessionallyinspected,cleaned
andrepairedifnecessary.

Creosote - Formation and Need for Removal
• Whenwoodisburnedslowly, itproducestarandother
organicvapors,whichcombinewithexpelledmoistureto
formcreosote.
• The creosote vapors condense in the relatively cool
chimneyueofaslow-burningre.
• As a result, creosote residue accumulates on the ue
lining. When ignited this creosote makes an extremely
hotre.
• Thechimneyandchimneyconnectorshallbeinspected
everytwomonthsduringtheheatingseasontodetermine
whenacreosotebuilduphasoccurred.
• Whencreosotehasaccumulateditshallberemovedto
reducetheriskofachimneyre.
C. Appliance Inspection - Routine
• Frequency: Every2monthsatthesametimethechim-
neyandchimneyconnectorareinspected.

• Cracksinglass
• Doorhandle-smoothcamoperation
• Bafeandceramicblanketcorrectplacement
• Bafeforcracks
• Firebrickforcracks,brokenorcrumbly
• Doorgasket.(Dollarbilltest).Placeadollarbillbetween
the stove and the door and then shut the door. If you
canpullthedollar bill out, removeonespacing washer
fromthedoorhandlebehindthelatchcamandtrythetest
again.SeeFigure 22.1 on page 22.Ifyoucanstillpull
thedollarbillout,replacethedoorgasket.
