User Guide
Initial preparation
Install the supplied batteries by following the in-
structions in the "Battery replacement" section.
Connect the HI 1048B pH electrode to the BNC
plug on the top of the meter.
Taking measurements
• Turn the instrument ON.
• Remove the electrode protective cap, sub-
merge the tip (4cm/1.5") into the sample to
be tested and allow the reading to stabilize.
• Since pH readings are directly affected by
temperature, for accurate measurements,
follow the instructions for manual tempera-
ture compensation. If the temperature of
the sample is significally different from that
at which the electrode was stored, allow a
few minutes to reach thermal equilibrium.
Notes:
• Before taking any measurements:
- make sure the meter is calibrated.
- rinse the electrode thoroughly with some
of the sample to be tested, to avoid cross
contamination.
• After use, switch the instrument off, clean
the electrode with HI 70635 and/or HI 70636
solution (see "Accessories" section) and
then rinse with clean water. Pour a few
drops of HI 70300 storage solution in the
protective cap and replace it before storing
the electrode.
• It is recommended to always keep the elec-
trode wet.
Manual temperature compensation
• Press the "pH/°C SET" key to select the
manual temperature mode.
• Remove the protective cap on
the top of the meter to access
the trimmers.
• Measure the temperature of the
solution with the supplied
ChecktempC thermometer.
• Using the supplied screwdriver, adjust the
"T" trimmer to display the measured tem-
perature value, e.g. 15.0°C.
OPERATIONAL GUIDE
• Remove the electrode protective cap and
rinse with some pH 7.01 solution.
• Immerse the electrode tip (ap-
proximately 4cm/1.5") and the
ChecktempC thermometer in
pH 7.01 buffer solution.
• Stir gently and wait for the read-
ing to stabilize.
Note: Place the ChecktempC thermometer
close to the pH electrode.
• Record the buffer temperature (e.g. 10°C) and
adjust the "T" trimmer accordingly.
• Using the supplied screwdriver, adjust the
"pH7" trimmer until the meter displays the
pH value at the buffer temperature (see table),
e.g. pH 7.07 at 10°C.
• Rinse first with clean water and then with a
small amount of pH 3.00 buffer. Dip the elec-
trode and the ChecktempC into the pH 3.00
buffer, stir gently and wait for the reading to
stabilize.Record the buffer temperature and
adjust the "T" trimmer accordingly.
• Using the supplied screwdriver, adjust the
"pH3" trimmer until the meter displays the
pH value at the buffer temperature (see table),
e.g. pH 3.04 at 10°C.
The calibration is now complete.
CALIBRATION
When batteries become weak,
the "V" tag lights up on the dis-
play to alert the user that only a
few hours of working time is left.
If the battery level is low enough to cause erro-
neous readings, the Battery Error Prevention
System (BEPS) turns the meter off.
Battery replacement must only take place in a
non-hazardous area using 1.5V AA alkaline
type.
Unscrew the two screws on the
meter back, remove the battery
compartment cover and replace
all the four batteries with new
ones, while paying attention to
the correct polarity. Reattach the
cover and tighten the two
screws.
