A.8 Cold Running Proble ms
If the engine idles p oorly when cold then the coolant map may need adjusting. If the engine is
hunting slightly when cold, then the coolant correction map is lean and fuel must be increased
in this map. Ignition advance also has an effect on the idle speed.
If the engin e is difficult to drive when cold, p articularly with gear ch an ges, try increasin g the
coolant correction factor for the throttle pump .
If an engine idles when warm, but fails to idle when cold without the throttle being opened
slightly may require idle sp eed control. The F10 can control an Idle Air Control motor that
will solve this p roblem.
A.9 Fuel Consumption
Poor fuel consumption is a result of an excessively rich mixture.
- If the fuel consumption in traffic is poor but the highway consumption is
good, then the areas of the map used for acceler ating will need to be
reduced.
- The throttle p ump will waste fuel if its values are too high.
- Try using the engine deceleration fuel cut-off feature.
- If the city consumption is fair but highway cruising uses too much fuel
then lean out the light load bars on the 2000 rpm to 3000 rpm maps (This is
where most cruising takes p lace).
- The cold start map may supply too much fuel on warm-up if this map is
rich at low temperatures. Try tuning for cold start prop erly by leaving the
engine stand over-night and perform the cold start tuning in the morning at
a variety of temp eratures.
