Tack Strip Installation Guide
A tack strip is used to keep carpet stretched, in place, and free of wrinkles. It can be nailed to
wood subfloors or concrete floors. Before installing or handling a tack strip, always put on safety
glasses.
To install a text strip properly, follow the steps below:
1. Position tack strip around the perimeter of the room, making sure that the pins are
pointing towards the wall.
2. Make sure to follow the exact contours of the walls, cutting the tack strip to the proper
lengths.
3. Do not place tack strip in doorways where the carpet is not cut. Avoid installing tack strip
to join two carpets at an inside doorway or across door openings.
4. Make sure to leave a space (or gully) between the edge of the tack strip and the wall,
which is slightly less than the thickness of the carpet; do not exceed 3/8. This is where
the carpet tucked after securing it to the tack strip.
5. Hammer in the preinstalled nails to the subfloor. A minimum of two (2) nails should be
used to secure each section of tack strip to the floor.
Note: Tack strip may be glued to certain types of flooring (when nails are not an option), such
as over Saltillo tile or flooring with radiant heat floors or drainage systems. Tack strip nails
cannot be driven into conduit or tubing.
