According to the National Safety Council (NSC), falls are the leading cause of accidental
death for people of 85 or older. NFSI (National Floor Safety Institute) reports that the annual
cost of slip and fall accidents tops $100 billion dollars each year. NFSI is committed to
improving pedestrian safety and in turn reduce the current trend of slip and fall accidents.
For a product to gain NFSI certication, it must pass a higher benchmark than currently
exists in the industry. The two steps to NFSI certication are as follows
Step 1: Laboratory Testing
Once our mats were sent to NFSI, they underwent initial testing with the NFSI UWT
(Universal Walkway Tester). The mats were wet tested for Static Coefcient of Friction
(SCOF) under NFSI 101A guidelines. After meeting the NFSI standard for slip resistance,
they were eligible for Step 2 Testing.
Step 2: Field Testing
A NFSI technician then places our Guardian mats in a “real world application” or test site for
a minimum of 30 days. After the 30 days, a member of the NFSI technical test team inspects
and prepares the test area for testing the product again with the UWT. If the product
meets or exceeds the minimum acceptable value, it will become certied as High Traction.
We are proud to say that our mats exceeded the minimum suggested value and are
appraised as High Traction!
