Ifyoustillhavenovoltage,separatethespraygun
andhosefromthevoltageisolationsystemand
checkwhetherthegunandhosealonewillhold
voltagewiththefollowingtest.
1.Flushthesystemwithwaterandleavethelines
lledwithwater.
2.Dischargethesystemvoltage(seeFluidVoltage
DischargeandGroundingProcedure,page30).
3.FollowthePressureReliefProcedure,page31.
4.Disconnecttheuidhosefromthevoltage
isolationsystem.
Avoidallowinganywatertoleakoutoftheuid
hoseasthatcouldcauseasignicantairgapin
theuidcolumnuptothegunelectrode,which
canbreaktheconductivitypathandconceala
potentialfailurearea.
5.Positiontheendofthehoseasfaraspossible
awayfromanygroundedsurface.Theendof
thehosemustbeatleast1ft.(0.3m)fromany
ground.Makesurethatnooneiswithin3ft.(0.9
m)oftheendofthehose.
6.TurntheESON/OFFvalvetoONandtrigger
thegunjustenoughtoturnontheairtothegun
butnottheuid.Measurethevoltageatthegun
electrodewithavoltageprobeandmeter.
7.Dischargethesystemvoltagebywaiting30
secondsandthentouchingthegunelectrode
withagroundedrod.
8.Checkthemeterreading:
•Ifthemeterreadingis45to55kV,thegunand
uidhoseareokay,andtheproblemisinthe
voltageisolationsystem.
•Ifthemeterreadingisbelow45kV,the
problemisinthegunoruidhose.
9.Flushtheuidhoseandgunwithenoughairto
dryouttheuidpassages.
10.TurntheESON/OFFvalvetoONandtriggerthe
gun.Measurethevoltageatthegunelectrode
withavoltageprobeandmeter.
•Ifthemeterreadingis45-55kV,thegun
powersupplyisokay,andthereisprobablya
dielectricbreakdownsomewhereintheuid
hoseorgun.Continuewithstep11.
•Ifthemeterreadingisbelow45kV,dothe
ElectricalTests,page39,tocheckthegunand
powersupplyresistance.Ifthosetestsshow
thegunandpowersupplyareokay,continue
withstep11.
11.Adielectricbreakdownismostlikelyinoneof
thefollowingthreeareas.Repairorreplacethe
componentthatisfailing.
a.Fluidhose:
•Checkforleakageoranybulgesinthe
outercover,whichmayindicateapin-hole
leakthroughthePTFElayer.Disconnect
theuidhosefromthegun,andlookfor
signsofuidcontaminationontheoutside
ofthePTFEportionoftheuidtube.
•Inspecttheendofthehoseconnectedto
thevoltageisolationsystem.Lookforcuts
ornicks.
•Makesurethehoseisproperlystripped
(seeConnecttheWaterborneFluidHose,
page18).Restriporreplacethehose.
b.Fluidpackings:
Removethepackingassemblyfromthegun
(seeFluidPackingRodRemoval,page56),
andlookforsignsofuidleakageorany
blackenedareas,whichwouldindicatearcing
isoccurringalongthepackingrod.
c.Fluidhoseconnectiontothespraygun:
Abreakdownattheuidhoseconnection
jointwouldbecausedbyuidleakingpast
theo-ringsealsontheendofthehose.
Removethehoseatthegunconnectionand
lookforsignsofuidleakagealongthePTFE
tube.
12.Beforereassemblingthegun,cleananddrythe
gunuidinlettube.Repacktheinnerspacerof
theuidpackingrodwithdielectricgreaseand
reassemblethegun.
13.Reconnecttheuidhose.
14.Checkthegunvoltagewiththevoltageprobe
andmeterbeforellingthegunwithuid.
