If your vehicle’s malfunction indicator lamp is illuminated, there could be freeze frame
data stored in memory for one or more diagnostic trouble codes. Freeze frame data
represent the value of multiple critical sensors at the time a problem is detected and a
DTC is stored. This information allows technicians to determine how the vehicle was
being driven when the problem occurred.
Whenever a vehicle has one or more stored DTCs, you should check for the existence of
freeze frame data. To do so, switch to the Freeze Frame Data tool (Image 7), start with
frame number 0, and click the Read button. The progress bar at the top of the table will
indicate the progress of the operation. If the vehicle supports freeze frames and data exist,
the table will populate with sensor values in both English and Metric units. Increment the
frame number and click the Read button to check for the existence of additional freeze
frame data. Repeat this process until no more data are found.
