S-16 CHECKING M OTORS
S-16A CHECKING FAN AND BLOW ER M OTOR
W INDINGS (PSC M OTORS)
Applies only to units with PSC M otors
The auto reset fan mot or overload is designed to prot ect the
motor against high temperature and high amperage condit ions
by breaking the common circuit wit hin the mot or, similar to the
compressor internal overload. However, heat generated wit hin
the mot or is faster to dissipate t han the compressor, allow at
least 45 minutes for the overload to reset, then ret est.
WARNING
1. Remove the mot or leads from it s respective connect ion
points and capacitor (if applicable).
2. Check the continuity bet w een each of the mot or leads.
3. Touch one probe of the ohmmet er to an unpaint ed end of
the mot or frame (ground) and the other probe in turn to
each lead.
If the w indings do not test continuous or a reading is obtained
from any lead to ground, replace t he mot or.
S-16D CHECKING EEM (ENERGY EFFICIENT M OTOR)
M OTORS
Applies only to units with EEM M otors
The EEM M ot or is a one piece, fully encapsulated, 3 phase
brushless DC (single phase AC input ) mot or with ball bearing con-
struction. Unlike t he ECM 2.3/ 2.5 mot ors, the EEM features an
integral control module.
Note: The GE TECM at e w ill not currently operat e the EEM mot or.
1. Using a voltmeter, check for 230 volt s to the mot or connec-
tions L and N. If 230 volts is present, proceed to st ep 2. If 230
volt s is not present, check t he line voltage circuit to t he mo-
tor.
2. Using a voltmeter, check for 24 volts from t erminal C to ei-
ther terminal 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, depending on which t ap is being
used, at the mot or. If volt age present, proceed to st ep 3. If
no voltage, check 24 volt circuit to mot or.
3. If voltage was present in st eps 1 and 2, the mot or has failed
and will need to be replaced.
Note: When replacing mot or, ensure the belly band is bet ween
the vent s on the mot or and t he w iring has the proper drip loop
to prevent condensate from entering the mot or.
