MAGNIFICATION
Byusingthedifferenteyepiece,withclearweatheroratcloserange,youcanidentifysectionsin
alargersize.Thesmallerthediameterofthelens,thestrongerthemagnification.Considerthat
strongmagnificationisnotequivalentto“seeing more”.Therefore,choosethemagnification,
withwhichyoucanseebest.
• Withthestrongermagnification,thefieldofvisionbecomessmaller.Youonlyseeasectionof
thesurface,butlarger/closer.
• Theresolutionandstrengthoflightdeclinesignificantly.Therefore,withaweakmagnification,
duetothelightstrengthandresolution,frequently,observationscanstillbemadeatdusk.
Withfulluseofthestrongesteyepiecesonlyshadowsarerecognisable.Evenbrightstartcan
frequentlyonlybeimprecisetoobserve.
• Theprecisefixingonanobjectandadjustmentofthemountingbecomesmuchmoredifficult.
• Throughlargedistances,e.g.withstars,therequiredprecisionincreases.Withatelescopethat
has8timesor10timesmagnification,aneasycomparisoncanbemade.Ifthetelescopeisaimed
atanearobject,e.g.awall2metresaway,theobservercanascertainhoweverybodymovement,
e.g.bybreathing,istransferredandtheimageshakes.Withatelescopewitha600/700/800mm
focalwidth,acorrespondinglargemagnificationandadistanceofmanythousandkilometres,
thisshakingeffectincreasesenormously.Amillimetredeviationoftenmeansentirestars.Ground
movements,tripodsthatarenotfixedsecurelyoralooselysetmountingcanbeveryannoying.
In order to make the setting easier, various devices are equipped with an additional vernier
adjuster.Veryhigh-qualitytelescopesarenotequippedwithverticallyandhorizontallyadjusta-
blemounting,rightuptocomputer-controlledvernieradjustment.Often,themountingismore
expensivethantheactualtelescope.
