theyexpect.Thetwophotographsbelowshowhowplanetsappearwhentheyareobservedwith
asmall,60mm,50xtelescope,whichisavailableeverywhereindepartmentstores.
COMET HUNT
Thehuntforcometscanoffergreatpleasuretotheamateur.Alargetelescopeisideal,asalarge
fieldofviewisimportant.Comets(describedinancienttimesas“hairystars”)wereoftenregarded
asanevilomen.DuringtheArab-Israeliconflict,acometwasmisinterpretedasawarweapon.
Inreality,acomethasverylittlemass.Theyhavebeendescribedas“thenextsomethingthat
cannotexist,yetissomething”.Theyhavealsobeendescribedas“dirtysnowballs”.Bothofthese
descriptionstellusagreatdealaboutthetruenatureofthecomets.Thecomethuntprovidesa
realchallengeandanobserverneedstoknowtheirwaythroughtheskyalmostaswellastheir
ownbackpocket.Manyobservershavehadcometsnamedafterthem.
