INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
E•Z DOWEL KIT
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
The E•Z Dowel is a simple and straight-forward device that’s easy to use. It
is intended to assist you in centering and aligning dowels on stock that is
nominally 5/8, 3/4 or 1 inch thick.
When doweling stock that is greater than 1 inch thick, registration may be alternated
between the top and the bottom surfaces to achieve balanced doweling. (A)
Edge Doweling
1. Mark the location where the dowels are to be inserted and extend these marks 2 inches
in from the edge (B).
2. Select the bushing that fits the dowel you intend to use and screw it into the long side of
E-Z DOWEL using the hole that centers on the thickness of your stock (C).
Secure your work piece and attach E•Z DOWEL to the edge centering the 2" registration line
in the appropriate “V” pointer (D). Drill holes for each dowel position. Assemble dry and
check it out.
Right Angle Doweling
Follow instructions (1) and (2) above for the edge doweled part. For the surface doweled
part, move the bushing to the corresponding location on the opposite leg of the
E•Z DOWEL (E).
NOTE - Registration lines must be on the outside of the edge doweled part and on the
inside of the surface doweled part (F). The meet of this joint may be flush, inset or overhung
by varying the match of the opposing locator holes and further by the use of shims between
the E•Z DOWEL and the registered surface.
Surface Doweling
To mount an interior shelf, such as in a bookcase, prepare the shelf as in “EDGE DOWELING”,
figure (B), and extend the mark over the edge of the board.
1. For 3/4" stock, clamp the shelf flat on the cabinet side with the prepared edge
1/2" above its intended location; for 5/8" stock 9/16" above, for 1" stock 3/8" above.
(All stock dimensions are nominal and shelf locations are measured from the top surface.)
2. Place the E•Z DOWEL jig on its back with the thumbscrew toward you and screw the
desired bushing in the right hand hole.
3. With the jig still on it’s back, slide it to the edge of the clamped shelf, align the
registration indicator at the top with the prepared lines on the shelf, hold the jig firmly
against the shelf edge and drill, figure (G).
(As a general rule, the top edge of the jig is 15/16" above the center of the bushing hole, so
you may locate a dowel anywhere you want to by referring to that dimension.)
