voltages above 42VACRMS or DC voltages above 60VDC. Both pose a shock hazard. • Before using the tester, inspect the case. Do not use the CT101 if the case is damaged. Look for cracks or missing plastic. Pay particular attention to the insulation around the connectors. • Do not operate the tester around explosive gas, vapor, or dust. • When using the probes, keep your fingers behind the finger guards. Insert one probe into the narrow (“hot”) slot of the receptacle and the other into the wide (neutral) slot. Either probe can go into either slot. If the line is “hot”, the orange neon bulb at the end of the tester will glow. To test whether the circuit is grounded, insert one probe into the narrow (“hot”) slot and the other into the ground slot. Be sure to push the probe all the way into the ground slot to be sure that it makes contact. The neon bulb will glow if the receptacle is grounded.
narrow slot is “hot”, and the wide slot is neutral (grounded). If the bulb does not glow, the screw is not grounded, the wide slot is “hot”, and the narrow slot is neutral. Three-Wire 220VAC Receptacles NEUTRAL Insert the first probe into the round (neutral) hole and the second probe into either rectangular slot. If the bulb glows, that slot is “hot”. Then move the second probe to the other rectangular slot. If the bulb glows, that slot is also “hot”. Finally, insert the probes into both rectangular slots.
