8. Voice Operation in CSC and Wireline
8.1. Introduction
This section provides preliminary information for using the voice features added to firmware
revision 1.1.2 of the SB320 multi-mode modem. Voice features are implemented for beta testing
only at this time. Full FCC and Cellular compliance has been verified but FCC approvals have not
yet been received.
The implementation of voice capability in wireline and CSC modes allows the user to place and
receive voice calls over the telephone network (PSTN or AMPS). The call uses the airlink or line
connected to the modem and the MIC and SPKR signals to carry analogue traffic. This is not a
form of digitized voice traffic like some Internet voice applications.
Voice calls can be treated like any landline or cellular call with the SB320 replacing the telephone
or cellular handset. The MIC and SPKR signals are used for the local “handset” end. The TIP and
RING signals are used for the wireline connection to the PSTN. CSC AMPS calls are connected
through the modem / radio components of the SB320.
8.2. Setting Voice Mode
Both wireline and CSC connections can support voice calls. CDPD is specifically a packet data
protocol so voice is not supported in that mode.
Register +WS46 (Modem Operating Mode) controls the modem’s mode. Two new values have
been added to set voice modes depending on the type of connection to use.
+WS46=17 sets CSC AMPS Voice mode.
+WS46=18 sets Wireline Voice mode.
Changes into these modes can made from any other mode.
8.2.1. Command and Register Profiles
The settings of commands and registers are called a profile. The modem can store three profiles.
Two profiles are shared by Wireline and CSC modes; a third profile is unique to CDPD mode.
Profiles are saved using the &W (Write Active Profile) command.
Upon reset or modem initialization, a profile is restored to the modem based on the mode and a
selection made with the &Y (Profile on Reset) command. Changes to the profile which are not
saved are lost on the next initialization. Note that the modem performs an initialization, resetting
the profile, whenever the mode is changed to Wireline (1) or Wireline Voice (18).
The parameters that control the MIC and SKPR settings (described in Section 8.5 below) are not
part of a saved profile. Future implementations will allow saving the voice control parameters.
See Section 8.5 below for details on adjusting these controls.
