5.7 NOMAD MXU System Problems
Iridium NOMAD Service
Equipment: Iridium Satellite Phone
Problem(s) Possible Cause(s) Solution(s)
The NOMAD User
cannot make or receive
any calls.
The appropriate SIM (FDN) card
may not be in the phone.
Provide directions to the NOMAD
User on how to put the appropriate
SIM card in the phone. Refer to
the equipment Instruction Manual.
Iridium homed #8817:
The NOMAD User may be trying to
make a call while outside of his or
her home country.
Explain that the Iridium homed #8817
network may only be accessed when
the NOMAD User is making calls from
within his or her home country.
Iridium homed #8817:
The NOMAD User may be near a
country border (within 10 km or 6
miles).
Explain that the Iridium homed #8817
calls may not go through when the
NOMAD User is within 10 km of a
country border.
The equipment may not be turned
on.
OR
The battery may not be charged.
Provide directions to the NOMAD User
on how the phone operates or on how
to change the battery. Refer to the
equipment Instruction Manual.
The appropriate provisioning
contracts may not be activated.
Check the Telephony Contract Window
to verify the appropriate contract is
activated. Verify the service package
supports the desired use (e.g. service
package does not restrict outbound or
inbound calls).
The NOMAD User may be
misinformed about dialing
directions.
Instruct the NOMAD User on the
dialing directions for a specific area.
Refer to the equipment Instruction
Manual.
Potential network problem.
Check the Network Advisory system
for any information in the Iridium
Network.
Iridium NOMAD Service
Equipment: Iridium Satellite Phone

A structure or the environment
(i.e. building, tunnel) may be
blocking the line of sight between
the NOMAD User’s phone and the
satellite.
Advise the NOMAD User to move to
a new location so a visible line of
sight to the satellite can be
established.
The NOMAD User
experiences difficulties
during the call:
Transmission
problems (cross-
talk,
echo, noise,
static, distortion)
Dropped calls
The NOMAD User may be
misinformed about the dialing
directions.
Instruct the NOMAD User on the
dialing directions for a specific area.
Refer to the equipment Instruction
Manual.
