Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting
Symptom Possible Cause
Engine will not start.
Refer to the engine owner’s
manual for engine-specific
procedures.
Verify fuel shut-off valve is OPEN.
Verify blade switch safety cover is in DISENGAGED position.
Verify spark plug wire is attached.
See Starting Engine. Verify throttle is in CHOKE position if engine is cold.
Fuel may be old. Change as necessary.
Spark plug may be dirty or cracked. Change as necessary. If spark plug is oily, leave
it out, hold a rag over the plug hole(s) and crank the engine several times to blow out
any oil in the cylinders. Wipe off plug and install.
Air filter dirty. Change as necessary.
Check the two fuses in wiring harness. Replace as necessary.
Verify all wire connections are clean and tight, Verify ground connections on handlebar
and all connections on solenoid are proper. Disconnect green battery ground wire first
to avoid sparks.
Check battery voltage. See Battery Care. If the voltage is low, charge with a 12-volt, 1
to 2-amp trickle charger. The battery may need to be periodically charged if the
machine is not used for at least 45 minutes at a time.

Engine lacks power or is not
running smoothly.

Verify throttle lever is in RUN position
Air filter may be dirty. Replace as necessary.
Spark plug may be dirty or cracked. Change as necessary. If spark plug is oily, leave
it out, hold a rag over the plug hole(s) and crank the engine several times to blow out
any oil in the cylinders. Wipe off plug and install.
Fuel may be old. Replace as necessary.

Engine smokes
Check engine oil level.
Verify unit is not on a steep incline. See

Air filter dirty. Replace as necessary.
Inspect cooling fins. Clean if necessary.
