Maintenance
Removing and Replacing the Chipper
Knife
WARNING

Accidental start-up. Before servicing or detangling, shut
down unit, allow to cool, remove keys, and disconnect spark
plug wire(s). Failure to do so could result in death, serious
injury, or equipment damage.
The chipper knife can remain acceptably sharp for over
40 hours, depending on the material being chipped.
Replace or sharpen the chipper knife when there is a
noticeable decrease in self-feeding performance. See
Maintaining Shredder Hammers for more information.
1. See Figure 4-4. Use a 1/2” wrench to remove the
nine loc
knuts (A) securing hammermill housing (B)
and shredder hopper assembly (C) to the unit.

ift the assembly off the machine.
3. See Figure 4-5. Use a 1/2” wrench to remove the
thr
ee locknuts (D) securing chipper chute (E) and
lift chipper chute off the machine.

4. See Figure 4-6. Rotate flywheel (F) until locknut
(G
) is visible through locknut access hole (H).

with an awl or sharp tool.

6. See Figure 4-6 and Figure 4-7. Insert a 3/16"
Allen wrench
into screw (I) and a 1/2” deep socket
on locknut (G) through locknut access hole (H) and
remove the locknut and screw.
7. Rotate the
hammermill assembly until the outer
locknut is visible through the locknut access cutout.
8. Rep
eat Steps 6 and 7 for the remaining screw and
locknut.
9. Remo
ve the dull or damaged knife.
10. Cle
an knife mounting area and file any metal burrs
that would prevent the replacement knife from
mounting flush to the flywheel.
11. Insta
ll a new or sharpened knife and finger tighten
the Allen screws and locknuts.
NOTE: New
Allen screws and locknuts are provided with
each new chipper knife.
12. Usin
g a 3/16” Allen wrench on the screw and a 1/2”
deep socket on the locknut, tighten the hardware to
secure the chipper knife.
13. V
erify both screws are tight.
14. Reins
tall chipper hopper and hammer mill housing/
shredder hopper assembly.
