3.4.1 GENERATORMAINTENANCE
Generatormaintenanceconsists of keepingthe unit clean and dry.
Operateand storethe unit in a clean dry environmentwhere it will
not be exposed to excessive dust, dirt, moisture or any corrosive
vapors.Coolingair slots in the generatormust not becomeclogged
with snow, leaves,or any otherforeign material.
Checkthe cleanlinessof the generatorfrequently and clean when
dust, dirt, oil, moisture or other foreign substances arevisible on
its exteriorsurface.
,ACAUTION!
,_ Never insert any object or tool through the air
cooling slots, even if the engine is not running.
NOTE:
DO NOTuse a gardenhoseto cleangenerator.Water can enter
the enginefuel systemand causeproblems. In addition,if water
entersthe generatorthroughcoolingair slots,some water will
be retainedin voidsand crevicesof the rotorand statorwinding
insulation.Water and dirt buildup on the generator internal
windingswill eventually decrease the insulationresistanceof
thesewindings.
3.4.2 TOCLEANTHEGENERATOR
• Usea damp cloth to wipe exteriorsurfaces clean.
• A soft, bristle brush may be usedto loosen caked on dirt, oil,
etc.
• A vacuumcleanermay be usedto pick up loose dirt anddebris.
• Low pressure air (not to exceed 25 psi) may be used to
blow away dirt. Inspect cooling air slots and openings on the
generator.Theseopeningsmust bekeptcleanandunobstructed.
3.4.3 ENG/NEMAINTENANCE
When working on the generator, always
disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and
keep wire away from spark plug.
3.4.4 CHECKINGOILLEVEL
Seethe "Before Starting the Generator"section for informationon
checkingthe oil level. The oil level should be checkedbefore each
use, or at least every eight hours of operation. Keepthe oil level
maintained.
3.4.5 CHANGINGTHEOIL
Changethe oil after every 100 hours. If running this unit under
dirty or dusty conditions, or in extremely hot weather, changethe
oil more often.
ACAUTION!
,_Hot oil may cause burns. Allow engine to
cool before draining oil. Avoid prolonged
or repeated skin exposure with used oil,
Thoroughly wash exposed areas with soap.
Use the followinginstructionsto changethe oil after the engine
coolsdown:
1. Cleanareaaroundoil drainplug.
2. Removeoil drain plugfrom engineand oil fill plug to drain oil
completelyinto a suitable container.
3. When oil has completely drained, install oil drain plug and
tightensecurely.
4. Fill engine with recommendedoil. (See "Before Starting the
Generator"for oil recommendations).
5. Wipe up any spilled oil.
6. Disposeof used oil at a propercollection center.
3.4.6 REPLACINGTHESPARKPLUG
Use ChampionN9YCspark plug or equivalent.Replace the plug
every 200 hours. This will help the engine start easier and run
better.
1. Stop the engineand pull the spark plug wire off of the spark
plug.
2. Cleanthe area aroundthe spark plug and remove it from the
cylinder head.
3. Set the spark plug's gap to 0.70-0.80 mm (0.028-0.031 in.).
Install the correctly gapped spark plug into the cylinder head
(Figure14).
