Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting

Accidental start-up. Before servicing or detangling, shut
down unit, allow to cool, remove keys, and disconnect spark
plug wire(s). Failure to do so could result in death, serious
injury, or equipment damage.

Risk of Burn. Allow the engine to cool before
performing the following procedure. Failure to
do so could result in serious injury.

Symptom Possible Cause
Engine does not start
Verify correct startup procedure. See Starting the Unit.
Verify spark plug wire is correctly attached.
Verify wiring behind key switch is secure.
Verify wiring connections including the ground connection are correct and secure.
Verify battery is properly charged.
Inspect air filter, clean if dirty. See engine owner’s manual.
Verify fuel is fresh. Replace if necessary. Use fuel stabilizer to keep gas longer than a
month.
Inspect spark plug for damage. Replace if damaged. If oily, remove spark plugs and
place a rag over the plug holes and crank engine several times to blow out any oil in
the cylinders. Clean plug and install.
Contact an IASD if problem persists.
Engine lacks power or not
running smoothly
Verify throttle lever is fully at FAST position.
Verify choke lever is fully at RUN position.
Dirty air filter; replace air filter.
Dirty or cracked spark plug; replace spark plug.
If spark plug is oily, remove spark plug and hold a rag over spark plug hole. Pull recoil
cord several times to blow out any oil in the cylinder. Wipe off spark plug and install.
Old fuel; drain and replace fuel. Add stabilizer if fuel is kept for a month or longer.
Old or dirty oil; drain and replace oil.
Verify cooling fins are clean and free of debris.
Contact an IASD if problem persists.
Engine smokes
Verify oil level; adjust as needed.
Verify unit is on a firm, level surface. Do not use on incline.
Dirty air filter; replace air filter.
Verify correct oil. Oil may be too light for temperature. See engine owner’s manual.
Verify cooling fins are clean and free of debris.
Contact an IASD if problem persists.
