Maintenance and Troubleshooting
2. Rotate chipper disk using a stick until three coun-
tersunk hex screws attaching chipper knife to fly-
wheel are visible.
3. Clean out heads of hex screws with an awl or
sharp tools.
4. See Figure 4-12. Insert a wood block to prevent
flywheel from moving, and remove hex screw.
Figure 4-12. Removing Hex Screw From Flywheel
NOTE: Hex screws were installed using medium
strength threadlocker. If necessary, apply heat from torch
to hex screws prior to removing them.
5. Repeat step 4 for remaining screws.
6. Remove dull or damaged chipper knife. Inspect the
chipper disk slot and chipper knife mounting area
for cleanliness. Metal burrs may need to be filed so
that a replacement chipper knife will be flush
against chipper disk.
7. Apply medium strength threadlocker to new or
reused hex screws.
8. Install new or sharpened chipper knife and finger
tighten hex screws to hold knife to chipper disk.
9. Tighten center hex screw using a hex key, followed
by the outer hex screw and inner hex screw. Verify
hex screw tightness.
10. Install access cover.
11. Verify gap between chipper knife and wear plate is
correct. Adjust as necessary.
12. Connect spark plug wire.
Inspect and Adjust Chipper Knife to
Wear Plate Gap
See Figure 4-13. Clearance between chipper knife (A)
and wear plate (B) must be inspected after replacing
chipper knife. Set clearance to 1/16 in (1.6 mm). An
incorrectly set gap will cause poor performance.

1. Remove negative battery terminal cable.
2. Remove chipper hopper.
3. See Figure 4-14. Rotate chipper disk using a stick,
until chipper knife is opposite of the wear plate.

4. Slide gap gauge (C) between chipper knife and
wear plate. Gap gauge will lightly touch both chip-
per knife and wear plate if set correctly.
5. See Figure 4-15. Loosen three 0.25 in (6.4 mm)
nuts (D) to adjust the wear plate gap. Slide wear
plate up or down to achieve the correct gap setting.
