Figure 4-9. Belt Alignment Check
2. Gap between straight edge and belt should be
equal at both ends. If it is parallel, no adjustment is
needed. If it is not, proceed to step 3.
3. See Figure 4-10. Remove bushing retaining bolts
(A).
Figure 4-10. Bushing Retaining Bolts
4. Install bolts in threaded holes (B) adjacent to bush-
ing retaining bolt holes.
5. Tighten bolts slowly, approximately one-quarter to
one-half turn evenly and alternately until bushing
releases from rotor shaft (C).
6. Remove bolts and insert them into original retain-
ing bolt holes when pulley is loose.
7. Align clutch and pulley using a straight edge by
moving bushing in or out on the rotor shaft.
NOTE: Pulley will move slightly into bushing when tight-
ening bolts. Compensate for this movement when posi-
tioning the bushing on the shaft.
8. Slowly tighten bushing retaining bolt as described
in step 5. Do not over tighten.
9. Inspect belt alignment and align as needed.
10. Install belt guard.
11. Connect spark plug wire.
Chipper Knife Sharpening
Knife sharpening should only be done by an IASD. The
following points must be considered:
• A 45° angle must be maintained for proper perfor-
mance.
• Excessive heat generated during sharpening will
damage chipper knife and weaken the metal.
• Chipper knife has a finite number of times it can be
sharpened.
• A new chipper knife has a 5/16 in (7.9 mm) mea-
surement between the short side bevel edge and
knife mounting holes.
• A chipper knife should never be sharpened to the
extent that more than 3/32 in (2.4 mm) is taken off
this measurement.
• Replace chipper knife once measurement is below
7/32 in (5.6 mm) or if dents or gouges cannot be
removed.
