Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Figure 4-5. Side Bearing Grease Fitting
2. See Drive Belt Maintenance. Remove the belt
guard to access the drive side bearing.
3. Apply three pumps or fewer of quality general-pur-
pose lithium grease with a hand-pumped grease
gun to each grease fitting.
4. Inspect the side bearing collar set screws (B) for
tightness. There are two set screws for each side
bearing. Reset them with medium strength thread-
locker if loose.
5. Connect spark plug wire.
Drive Belt Maintenance
Checking and Adjusting Belt Tension
1. See Figure 4-6. Remove support hardware (A) on
top of and underneath belt guard and place aside.
Figure 4-6. Drive Belt Guard Bolt Locations
2. See Figure 4-7. Place a straight edge on bottom of
belt from clutch pulley to drive pulley.
Figure 4-7. Belt Tension
3. Push belt upwards using approximately ten pounds
of force. Belt should deflect away from straight
edge approximately 0.375 in (9.5 mm).
• If belt deflection is close to 0.375 in (9.5 mm) as
desired, adjustment is not needed. If belt deflection
is out of range, proceed to step 4.
4. See Figure 4-8. Loosen the four engine bolts (B)
securing the engine base to the frame.
Figure 4-8. Engine and Tension Adjustment Bolts
NOTE: If replacing the belt, loosen tension adjustment
bolt counterclockwise to move engine back far enough to
remove belt. Install a new belt over clutch and drive pul-
ley and perform tension adjustment.
5. Tighten or loosen tension adjustment bolt (C) as
necessary to achieve proper tension.
6. Tighten engine bolts and install belt guard when
adjustment is complete.
NOTE: Inspect and adjust drive belt every hour for the
first five hours of operation after a new belt is installed.
Belt Alignment
NOTE: Never make belt adjustments by moving clutch
on engine shaft.
1. See Figure 4-9. Place one end of a straight edge
against the face of the drive pulley, with other end
near top portion of clutch, next to the belt but not
touching the clutch.
