Use And Care Manual
Owner’s Manual for Chipper/Shredder 17
Operation
• Verify all material in hopper is processed before
shutting off engine.
• Trim off side twigs before chipping.
• Rotate branches while feeding into unit to improve
performance and reduce chance of a tail.
• Green wood processes easier than dry wood.
• Softwood processes easier than hardwood.
Chipper Hopper
NOTE: Do not force feed material. Sharpen or replace
chipper knife if performance is poor.
NOTE: Do not feed stubs or knots into unit.
NOTE: Material longer than 6 ft (1.8 m) must be cut to
size before being fed into unit.
The chipper hopper is designed for larger, heavier mate-
rials that are not suitable for the shredder hopper. The
chipper knife is mounted to a flywheel, resulting in “chips”
of material. Branches or twigs ranging from 1–5 in (2.5–
12.7 cm) in diameter are appropriate for the chipper hop-
per.
• Keep materials at the same angle as the chipper
hopper while feeding.
• Use the next piece of material to finish processing
the previous piece if a tail is left behind.
• Stop feeding the unit if engine speed decreases.
Allow engine to return to speed before continuing.
• If processed material is built up to within 3 in (76.2
mm) of the discharge opening, shut down unit and
allow to cool. Move unit or processed material pile
with a shovel or rake. Do not use hands or feet to
move processed material. A blocked discharge
opening could result in jamming.
• Shutoff engine before moving processed material.
DANGER
Personal injury. NEVER attempt to dislodge debris
from discharge chute or hopper while unit is running.
(000508)
The cutting blades can start again at any moment, which will
result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage.
DANGER
Personal injury. NEVER insert body parts or metal
objects in the discharge chute or hopper for any
(000509)
reason while the unit is running. Doing so will result in death,
serious injury, property or equipment damage.
DANGER
Flying objects. Debris travels outward at a
high speed. Stand clear of the discharge chute
while unit is running. Failure to do so will
result in death or serious injury.
(000510)
WARNING
Personal injury. Do not operate the unit with the hopper
or discharge chute removed. Doing so could cause
death, serious injury, property or equipment damage.
(000513a)
WARNING
Personal injury. Keep discharge area clear. Failure to
do so could cause the unit to jam, which could cause
personal injury or equipment damage.
(000514a)
WARNING
Equipment damage. Do not overload unit or attempt
to chip/shred material beyond the manufacturer’s
recommendation. Doing so could result in death,
severe injury, or equipment damage.
(000515)
WARNING
Personal injury. Securely fasten chipper hopper to unit
prior to use. Failure to do so could result in serious
injury, property or equipment damage.
(000517)
WARNING
Personal injury. Do not hold tightly to material fed into
unit. Doing so could result in death or serious injury.
(000518a)
WARNING
Personal injury. Do not lean over unit while operating. Feed
materials straight down into the hopper with arms parallel to
the ground and several inches above the opening. Failure to
do so could result in death or serious injury.
