8.1 SYNTHETIC VISION TECHNOLOGY (SVT
™
)

SVT is intended as an aid to situational awareness only and may not provide either the accuracy or reliability
upon which to solely base decisions and/or plan maneuvers to avoid terrain, obstacles, or traffic.
The Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT
™
)isavisualenhancementtotheG1000HIntegratedFlightDeck.SVT
depictsaforward-lookingattitudedisplayofthetopographyimmediatelyinfrontoftheaircraft.Theeldof
viewis30degreestotheleftand35degreestotheright.SVTinformationisshownonthePrimaryFlightDisplay
(PFD),oron the MultifunctionDisplay(MFD) inReversionaryMode(Figure 8-142).The depicted imagery
is derived from the aircraftattitude, heading, GPS three-dimensional position, and a six arc-seconddatabase
ofterrain,obstacles,andotherrelevantfeatures.Theterraindataresolutionofsixarc-seconds,meaningthat
theterrainelevationcontoursarestoredinsquaresmeasuringsixarc-secondsoneachside,isrequiredforthe
operationofSVT.Lossofanyoftherequireddata,includingtemporarylossoftheGPSsignal,willcauseSVTto
bedisableduntiltherequireddataisrestored.
TheSVTterraindisplayshowslandcontours,largewaterfeatures,towers,andotherobstaclesover200’AGL
thatareincludedintheobstacledatabase.Culturalfeaturesonthegroundsuchasroads,highways,railroad
tracks,cities,and stateboundariesarenotdisplayedevenifthosefeaturesarefoundontheMFDmap.The
terrain display also includes a north–south east–west grid with lines oriented with true north and spaced at one
arc-minuteintervalstoassistinorientationrelativetotheterrain.Thecolorsusedtodisplaytheterrainelevation
contoursaresimilartothatofthetopomapdisplay.
TheHelicopterTerrainAwarenessandWarningSystem(HTAWS)isintegratedwithinSVTtoprovidevisualand
auditoryalertstoindicatethepresenceofterrainandobstaclethreatsrelevanttotheprojectedightpath.Terrain
alertsaredisplayedinredandyellowshadingonthePFD.
Theterraindisplayisintendedforsituationalawarenessonly.Itmaynotprovidetheaccuracyordelityon
whichtobasedecisionsandplanmaneuverstoavoidterrainorobstacles.Navigationmustnotbepredicated
solelyupontheuseoftheHTAWSterrainorobstacledatadisplayedbytheSVT.
