HAZARD AVOIDANCE
Displaying Precipitation weather information:
1) Select the MAP Softkey (for the PFD Inset Map, select the INSET Softkey). This step is not necessary on the
Weather Data Link (CNXT) Page.
2) Press the PRECIP Softkey.
Radardatashownrepresentslowestlevel,basereectivity,ofradarreturns.Thedisplayoftheinformation
is color-coded to indicate the weather severitylevel.All weather productlegendscan be viewed on the

The display of No Radar Coverage is enabled when Precipitation is selected for display. Areas where
precipitationradarcoverageisnotcurrentlyavailableorisnotbeingcollectedareindicatedingrayshadeof
purple.AwhiteboundarylinewithwhitetickmarksdepictstheselectedcoverageareaoftheConnextData
Request.Thisboundaryenclosestheprecipitationdatawhenthisweatherproductisdisplayed.
ReFlectivity
Reectivityistheamountoftransmittedpowerreturnedtotheradarreceiver.ColorsonthePrecipitation
displaydirectlycorrelatetothelevelofdetectedreectivity.Reectivityasitrelatestohazardousweather
canbeverycomplex.
Theroleofradarisessentiallytodetectmoistureintheatmosphere.Simplyput,certaintypesofweather
reectradarbetterthanothers.Theintensityofaradarreectionisnotnecessarilyanindicationofthe
weatherhazardlevel.Forinstance,wethailreturnsastrongradarreection,whiledryhaildoesnot.Both
wetanddryhailcanbeextremelyhazardous.
Thedifferentradarechointensitiesaremeasuredindecibels(dB)relativetoreectivity(Z).Weather
radars measure the reflectivity ratio, or the energy reflected
backto
theradarreceiver(
designatedbythe
letterZ)
.ThevalueofZincreasesasthereturnedsignalstrengthincreases.
