NEXRAD
NOTE: NEXRAD data cannot be displayed at the same time as turbulence, icing, or terrain.
The National Weather Service (NWS) operates the WSR-88D, or NEXRAD (NEXt-generation RADar)
system,anextensivenetworkof156high-resolutionDopplerradarsystems.TheNEXRADnetworkprovides
centralizedmeteorologicalinformationforthecontinentalUnitedStatesandselectedoverseaslocations.The
maximumrangeofasingleNEXRADsiteis250nm.
IndividualNEXRADsitessupplythenetworkwithradarimages,andtheimagesfromeachradarsitemay
arriveatthenetworkatdifferentratesandtimes.Periodically,theweatherdataprovidercompilestheavailable
individualsiteimagesfromthenetworktoformacompositeimage,andassignsasingletimetoindicatewhen
itcreatedtheimage.ThisimagebecomestheNEXRADweatherproduct.Individualimages--gatheredfrom
eachNEXRADsite--differinage,andarealwaysolderthanthedisplayedNEXRADweatherproductage.The
dataproviderthensendstheNEXRADdatatotheSiriusXMWeatherservice,whosesatellitestransmitthis
informationduringthenextdesignatedrefreshtimefortheNEXRADweatherproduct.
Becauseofthetimerequiredtodetect,assemble,anddistributetheNEXRADweatherproduct,thedisplayed
weatherinformationcontainedwithintheproductmaybesignicantlyolderthanthecurrentradarsynopsis
andmaynotdepictthecurrentweatherconditions.TheNEXRADweatherproductshouldneverbeusedasa
basisformaneuveringin,near,oraroundareasofhazardousweatherregardlessoftheinformationitcontains.
