6.6 TERRAIN-SVS
WARNING: Do not use Terrain-SVS information for primary terrain avoidance. Terrain-SVS is intended only
to enhance situational awareness.
NOTE: Terrain data is not displayed when the aircraft is outside of the installed terrain database coverage
area.
NOTE: Terrain-SVS is standard when the Synthetic Vision System (SVS) option is installed. The TAWS-B
option will take precedence over Terrain-SVS when TAWS-B is also installed.
Terrain-SVSisaterrainawarenesssystemintegratedwithintheoptionalSyntheticVisionSystem(SVS).Terrain-
SVSprovidesvisualandauditoryalertstoindicatethepresenceofthreateningterrainrelevanttotheprojected
ightpath.FordetailedinformationregardingSVS,refertotheAdditionalFeaturessectionofthisPilot’sGuide.
Terrain-SVSdoesnotcomplywithTSO-C151bcerticationstandards.Itincreasessituationalawarenessandaids
inreducingcontrolledightintoterrain(CFIT).DonotconfuseTerrain-SVSwiththeoptionalTerrainAwareness
and Warning System - Class B (TAWS-B). TAWS-B is more sophisticated and robust, and it is TSO-C151b
certied.Althoughtheterrainandobstaclecolormapdisplaysarethesame,TAWS-Busesmoresophisticated
algorithms to assess aircraft distance from terrain and obstacles.
Terrain-SVSdoesnotprovidethefollowing:
•PrematureDescentAlerting(PDA)
•ExcessiveDescentRate(EDR)
•NegativeClimbRate(NCR)
•Descentto500FeetCallout(DFC)
Terrain-SVSrequiresthefollowingcomponentstooperateproperly:
•Valid3-DGPSposition
•Validterrain/airportterrain/obstacledatabase
Terrain-SVS displays altitudes of terrain and obstructions relative to the aircraft position and altitude with
referencetoadatabasethatmaycontaininaccuracies.Terrainandobstructionsareshownonlyiftheyareinthe
database.Terrainandobstacleinformationshouldbeusedasanaidtosituationalawareness.Theyshouldnever
be used to navigate or maneuver around terrain.
Note that all obstructions may not be available in the terrain and obstacle database. No terrain and obstacle
informationisshownwithoutavalid3-DGPSposition.
TheG1000GPSreceiverprovidesthehorizontalpositionandaltitude.GPSaltitudeisderivedfromsatellite
position.GPSaltitudeisthenconvertedtotheheightabovegeodeticsealevel(GSL),whichistheheightabove
meansealevelcalculatedgeometrically.GSLaltitudeisusedtodetermineterrainandobstacleproximity.GSL
altitude accuracy is affected by satellite geometry, but is not subject to variations in pressure and temperature that
normallyaffectpressurealtitudesensors.GSLaltitudedoesnotrequirelocalaltimetersettingstodetermineMSL
altitude.Itisawidely-usedMSLaltitudesource.
