BACKCOURSE MODE (BC)
NOTE: When making a backcourse approach, set the Selected Course to the localizer front course.
Backcourse Mode captures and tracks a localizer signal in the backcourse direction. The mode may be
selected by pressing the BCKey(GDU1044Bonly).BackcourseModeisarmediftheCDIisgreaterthanone
dotwhenthemodeisselected.IftheCDIislessthanonedot,theBackcourseModeisautomaticallycaptured
when the BCKeyispressed.TheightdirectorcreatesrollsteeringcommandsfromtheSelectedCourseand
deviationwheninBackcourseMode.Theannunciation‘BC’intheAFCSStatusBoxindicatesBackcourseMode
(Figure7-26).
LOCNavigationModeautomatically(i.e.,withoutpressingtheBCkey)revertstoBackcourseModeifthe
localizerfrontcourseisgreaterthan105°fromtheaircraftheading.Refertothepreviousdiscussion(inthis
section)onNavigationModesformoreinformationonLOCNavigationMode.

The Selected Course is controlled using the CRSKnob.PressingtheCWSButtonandhand-yingthe
aircraftdoesnotresetanyreferencedatawhileinBackcourseMode.Theautopilotguidestheaircraftbackto
the Selected Course when the CWSButtonisreleased.
