NEXRAD

or icing data is displayed.
The National Weather Service (NWS) operates the WSR-88D, or NEXRAD (NEXt-generation RADar)
system,anextensivenetworkof156high-resolutionDopplerradarsystems.TheNEXRADnetworkprovides
centralizedmeteorologicalinformationforthecontinentalUnitedStatesandselectedoverseaslocations.The
maximumrangeofasingleNEXRADsiteis250nm.Inadditiontoawidearrayofservices,theNEXRAD
networkprovidesimportantinformationaboutsevereweatherandairtrafcsafety.
IndividualNEXRADsitessupplythenetworkwithradarimages,andtheimagesfromeachradarsitemay
arriveatthenetworkatdifferentratesandtimes.Periodically,theweatherdataprovidercompilestheavailable
individualsiteimagesfromthenetworktoformacompositeimage,andassignsasingletimetoindicatewhen
itcreatedtheimage.ThisimagebecomestheNEXRADweatherproduct.Individualimages--gatheredfrom
eachNEXRADsite--differinage,andarealwaysolderthanthedisplayedNEXRADweatherproductage.The
dataproviderthensendstheNEXRADdatatotheSiriusXMWeatherservice,whosesatellitestransmitthis
informationduringthenextdesignatedrefreshtimefortheNEXRADweatherproduct.
Becauseofthetimerequiredtodetect,assemble,anddistributetheNEXRADweatherproduct,thedisplayed
weather information contained within the product may be significantly older than the current radar synopsis
andmaynotdepictthecurrentweatherconditions.TheNEXRADweatherproductshouldneverbeusedasa
basis for maneuvering in, near, or around areas of hazardous weather regardless of the information it contains.
