APPROACH OPERATIONS
Not all approaches in the database are approved for GPS use. When selecting an approach, a “GPS”
designation to the right of the procedure name indicates the procedure can be flown using the GPS receiver.
Some procedures will not have this designation, meaning the GPS receiver can be used for supplemental
navigation guidance only. If the GPS receiver cannot be used for primary guidance, the appropriate
navigation receiver must be used for the selected approach (e.g., VOR or ILS). The final course segment of
ILS approaches, for example, must be flown by tuning the NAV receiver to the proper frequency and selecting
that NAV receiver on the CDI.
All WAAS approaches (LNAV, LNAV+V, L/VNAV, and LPV) are displayed in the list of available approaches
(Figure 5-134) and will give vertical guidance up to the IAF. The WAAS approach may be activated at any
point to proceed directly to the IAF. It should be noted that a lateral flight plan (LNAV) does not include
vertical guidance after the Final Approach Fix.
The G1000 WAAS GPS allows for flying the approaches listed in the table below.
APPROACH TYPE DESCRIPTION
LNAV Non-precision GPS approach. Lateral navigation only.
LNAV+V Non-precision GPS approach. Lateral navigation with advisory
vertical guidance when available.
LNAV/VNAV Lateral navigation with vertical guidance. Similar to localizer and
glideslope, but lateral and vertical integrity limits are larger.
LPV Localizer performs with vertical guidance. Similar to the
LNAV/VNAV, but has lower minima.
