Soil Preparation
Healthy soil should have good tilth, nutrient content,
and a viable population of beneficial microorganisms.
We recommend using natural and organic ingredients
to prepare the soil and maintain soil fertility. It is always
a good idea to have a soil test to identify your soil type
(sandy, loam, silt, clay) and find out your soil pH.
Garden State Bulb Chester Blackberry Bare Roots come directly from our farms and growers in the US. They are winter hardy
with sweet black berries up to 1 inch, just bursting with flavor! Excellent for eating fresh, as well as jams, jellies and pies. These
thornless plants grow best in full sun with well drained soil. Please note, it can take 1 to 3 years after planting to reach full
maturity size and yielding full production of fruit.

NOTE: It is important to store correctly until planting. Store in a cool, dry place with plenty of air circulation. Plant in spring
as soon as ground has thawed and soil has warmed to 50°F and is workable. Usually 4-6 weeks after the last frost.

Plant blackberries in the spring after the ground has thawed
and there is no longer danger of frost.
Choose a location with well-drained soil that receives full sun.
Loosen soil prior to planting.
Remove plant from packaging and lightly loosen the bottom of
the root ball to release the roots. Dig a hole in loosened soil as
deep as the roots and about twice as wide. Be sure the hole is
large enough to encompass the roots without bending them.
Place plant in hole with the roots down and the crown/top of
the roots about 1” below soil surface. Space plants 4'-6' apart
in rows 7' apart.
Cover with soil and water well so that the soil settles. Keep soil
moist during periods of dry weather but do not overwater.

* After the first fruiting season, prune to the ground to allow room for new canes. This
plant produces fruit on 2 year canes.
* Trellising is beneficial for cane support.
* Plants may produce a small amount of fruit after being planted, with more plentiful
crops occurring on plants that are 2-4 years old.
