FORESTS
One of the fundamental advantages of formers is their ability to plant forests
of terrestrial vegetation on the more inhospitable regions of Planet. Forests
provide a small yield of nutrients and minerals, while doing no damage to the
ecology of Planet (in fact, forest can actually offset ecological damage from
enhanced squares). Over time, forest squares expand into adjacent undevel-
oped squares. When a forest is harvested—that is, when any enhancement
other than a road is built on it—you receive a one-time bonus of +5 minerals.
Planting forests is an excellent method of deriving benefit from arid terrain,
particularly early in the game before some of the more advanced terraforming
options are available.
FUNGUS
The ubiquitous xenofungus can produce resources when you discover the
appropriate technology:
• Centauri Ecology gives you one nutrient per fungus square (per turn).
• Centauri Meditation gives you one energy per fungus square (per turn).
• Centauri Genetics gives you one mineral per fungus square (per turn).
• Centauri Psi gives you one more nutrient per fungus square (per turn).
• Secrets of Alpha Centauri gives you one more energy per fungus square
(per turn).
• Terraformers can plant xenofungus after the discovery of Ecological
Engineering; sea terraformers can plant sea fungus with this discovery.
